This blog was created for a class assignment and has become so much more to me. Throughout my blogging experience the tool that was most effective was the sharing tool that automatically shares blog posts to your linked social media accounts. The least effective tool was the categories and tags tool. The categories and tags tool was in no way beneficial to my blog.
If I were to do my blog differently I would definitely take more time to really curate my blog posts. I would dedicate more time to researching my topic as well as take better and more unique photos. This experience blogging has already helped me and will continue help me in the future. The internship I just recently received wants to utilize a blog to help promote their brand and were very interested in my blogging experience. Blogging and branding is a vital part to public relations. The blogging community is becoming very popular and brings a whole new audience to public relations practitioners.
According to my WordPress stats, my most popular week was the week of April 4 to April 10 with 224 views and 117 visitors. My most popular post was “Live and Let Lash” with 84 views. I believe this post was most popular because I had been actively posting every week and my view count was increasing since my content was becoming more active. Out of all of my statistics none of the data was surprising to me. Overall my blog was a wonderful learning experience and brought me skills that will continue to benefit me in the future.
Winged eyeliner is my go to makeup look. Using eyeliner can be really intimidating, especially if you’re new to the world of liquid or gel eyeliner. I remember the days when I would sit in my bathroom and look at the eyeliner having to mentally prepare myself to start this new challenge. Now eyeliner has become a staple in my beauty routine and here I am, your inexpensive eyeliner fairy godmother.
My new obsession is the L’oreal Infallible Super Slim liquid eyeliner. I used to use the Benefit brand gel push-up liner. The Benefit eyeliner is $24 and I honestly prefer the $9 L’oreal eyeliner. The L’oreal is not only cheaper but the liquid goes on so smooth and the pointed tip makes winged eyeliner a breeze. If you don’t believe me, here’s a picture below. It took me 2 minutes to wing both of my eyes. 2 minutes is pretty much 5 seconds in eyeliner time.
Some tips to make eyeliner a little easier:
- Use Eye Lid Primer before applying the eyeliner. The primer makes the eyeliner stay on to it’s full potential. I get a sample size of the Urban Decay Primer Potion, and it lasts me months for only $12.
- When applying your eyeliner try to angle your wing to the end of your eyebrow to create symmetry for both of your eyes. The eyebrow method will also give you the best angle for your eye shape.
- If you have small eyes, only draw your eyeliner to the middle of your eye. Doing my eyeliner halfway is the only way I’ll do my eyeliner, and it’s how I did it in the picture above.
- Curl your eyelashes before applying eyeliner in order to prevent smudging the eyeliner.
Now I have given you all the tools to get that eyeliner on point. Spread your eyeliner wings and fly sweet angels.
The entire goal of this blog has been to bring beauty products to people who are also trying to save some money. Being in college I am amongst the people who should be buying groceries rather than a new lipstick. With that being said, having some high end makeup can be totally doable. I like to look at my makeup drawer has a hodge podge of drugstore makeup and Sephora. Lucky for me almost all of my expensive makeup was given to me by Santa (thanks Santa). However, there are also a few pieces I saved for. This blog post is going to give you an array of prices for makeup. What’s most important to remember is that makeup is more about your skill of application than buying an eyeliner that’s $40.
The products that pull a lot of weight for a low price are the NYX brow pencil, the color pop liquid lipstick and the Sonia Kashuk highlighter stick. The NYX brow pencil costs $10. It is super easy to use and includes a brush on the other end to blend the product throughout your eyebrows. The pencil is simple to apply and has shades perfect for any hair color. The Colourpop liquid lipstick cost $6 and provides a strong pigmentation. This liquid lipstick is easy to apply but has the tendency to be a tad sticky. Overall the lipstick stays wonderfully on the lips and it even lasted through me eating a PB&J. The Sonia Kashuk stick highlighter cost $12 and makes me feel like a radiant sun goddess. Out of all the products mentioned this highlighter is my favorite. The Sonia Kashuk highlighter honestly works better than highlighter I own from Sephora and I rarely leave the house without swiping some on.
The high-end products I used definitely enhanced my face, but the focal points of my face, such as my lips and cheekbones, were created using drugstore cosmetics. My philosophy on buying expensive makeup is this: Never buy expensive mascara and lipstick. Mascara dries out so quickly that buying expensive brands are almost like throwing away money. When it comes to lipstick, there are so many wonderful and frugal brands such as Colourpop, that have been taking all of my money lately. When it comes to buying concealers, foundations, powders and skincare products, I recommend splurging because your skin is really important and needs to be taken care of. Now go on and be beautiful you stunning goddesses.
I have noticed a lot of hype over the NYX Color Correcting Concealer Palette. The purpose of this palette is to target problem areas on your skin such as redness, dark circles, dullness and sallow undertones in the skin by using opposite colors on the color wheel to even out the skin. The NYX palette was $12 so I decided to try my hand at color correcting on mine and my roommate’s skin. To my roomies, if you’re reading this thank you for letting me color on your face.
I started out with the lovely Bianca. Bianca has freckles and red hair AKA she’s a ginger. Her face has the tendency to get red but other than that there were not any other issues. I focused on using the green concealer to cover the overall redness and blemishes on her face. I blended the product in with a Beauty Blender that I found for $1, just click the link to see for yourself! It works just as well as the name brand blenders. The green took away all of the redness, but required a lot of blending. Once the color was blended I applied her foundation and powder. Here are the before,(on the left) and after, (on the right) pictures.
The beautiful Yali was my next victim for color correction. Yali is hispanic and has a completely different skin tone from Bianca. What I targeted with Yali’s skin was slight redness and the dark circles underneath her eyes. Once again I used the green to combat the redness and for the dark circles I used the buttercream yellow color on the palette. Overall the colors were corrected but the palette did not work as well for her darker skin and made her look slightly more pale than she actually is. Here are the before, (left) and after,(right) pictures.
Lastly I color corrected yours truly. I have very fair skin without freckles. My main problem is redness but for the purpose of this experiment I corrected the slight darkness under my eyes and the dull patches on my face. The only new color I used this time was the peach color to combat dullness. The color correction worked the best on my skin since I don’t have freckles. With that being said I still felt way paler that I actually am, and that’s definitely an achievement because I look like I’ve never seen the sun. I added some blush to try and make my face look less zombie-like. Here are the before, middle and after pictures.
My verdict for the NYX Color Correcting Palette is two out of five stars. If you don’t have fair, pale and white skin the concealer is likely to make you look pale and is not suited for dark skin tones. If you do decide to use the palette, a little goes a long way and I suggest sticking to using one or two colors. Unless you have major skin issues it’s not worth $12 to only use one or two colors out of the six-color palette. The peach color made no difference in making my face look less dull. The best color was the buttercream yellow for dark circles, the green was a close second. If you’ve had a better experience with this palette please share your experience with me. Thanks for color correcting with me you shining diamonds.
Eyelashes are one of the most important features of the face, and I was not blessed. I inherited my dad’s lashes. I’m talking, my eyelashes are practically nonexistent without mascara and so I bring to you today a life changing mascara. I’ve heard the rave reviews of the Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara and here I bring to you, the college girl version.
I looked up the best dupes for the “Better than Sex” mascara and the Rimmel London “Scandaleyes” seemed to be the biggest drugstore competitor. I had never tried the Too Faced mascara before and didn’t know what to expect. When I’m looking for mascara I’m mostly looking for length and volume to prove to the world that I do, in fact, actually have eyelashes. In trying both of these mascaras, both of them had wide and fanned out brushes which really kept my eyelashes from clumping up.
Here are my little baby lashes before putting any mascara on:
The Too Faced mascara made my eyelashes slightly longer but the “Scandaleyes” held it’s own, especially in price comparison. The “Better than Sex” mascara being $23 and the “Scandeyes” being $6. If you still desire the Too Faced mascara, try buying the sample size for $12 from stores like Sephora or Ulta. The sample size lasts a long time especially since mascara needs to be replaced frequently. Overall I would say that the “Scandaleyes” definitely holds its own and gives you a lot more bang for your buck.
The right side is “Better than Sex” and the left is “Scandaleyes.”
To help your eyelashes without mascara try this lash serum. I live by putting the serum on every night as well as taking biotin every day. Biotin is a vitamin that can be bought at any drugstore and it helps promote healthy skin, nails and hair growth. So have a beautiful day sweet darlings and remember that all eyelashes are beautiful.
The secret to glowing skin and a lovely complexion isn’t caking on 12 different products. The secret to glowing skin starts with what you’re putting in your body. I love junk food as much as the next person, I have no shame in putting away an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s in one sitting but that’s not going to help my skin look alive in the morning time. Everybody’s skin type is different and skin care routines are unique for everyone. Follow me on the journey to skin care that works for people of all skin types.
Ditch that soda for a bottle of water. Obviously nothing feels as good at that first sip of soda but they severely dehydrate your skin. One of the most important steps, if not the most important step to healthy skin is to drink water and plenty of it. I drink water like it’s my day job and it has made the utmost difference in the quality of my skin. Not only is water good for your skin but it will also give you more energy and your body will thank you. To amp up your water try adding lemon to it or one of these infused waters for clear skin.
You Are What You Eat
It’s a myth that chocolate causes you to break out but it’s no myth that there are certain food that work a little harder for your skin than others. One of the super foods for skin and hair is avocado. The good fats and vitamins in avocado help cell turnover in your skin aiding in the moisture and protection for your facial skin. Don’t believe me? Here’s some science to prove it. All hail Queen Avocado.
Some other foods that will bring your skin to another level are green tea, walnuts, pomegranates and oatmeal. The best things about these skin remedies are that they can be found in your local grocery store and are an economical choice to an expensive skin serum. Beautiful skin starts with a healthy diet, so love your body, love your pores and eat more consciously. It might just save you money on powder and concealer. The healthier your skin is the less products you’ll have to use. Glow away beautiful creatures.
Beauty Banter by Sarah Howard is an exquisite and informational blog for beauty junkies alike. This blog covers a multitude of categories from hair to makeup trends happening now. The style of the blog is clean-cut and easy to navigate, creating a wonderful user experience. DIY beauty products are featured on this blog as well as fashion. Overall the blog is helpful and fun for the beauty obssesed.
The most exciting part of Beauty Banter in my opinion is the under $10 section. Howard finds great beauty buys that are no more than $10 and reviews them so you don’t have to. Some of her other under $10 buys include hair products, sunscreens and beach essentials. My personal favorites are, “10 Of The Best Drugstore Makeup Products” and, “Under $10: Drugstore Mascaras.”
I can vouch that Howard knows what she’s talking about. After reading her blog I happened to be at a drugstore and picked up one of her recommendations. I bought and tried the Sonia Kashuk cream highlighter stick and I fell in love with it. Howard was also correct about the fact that these products can deliver desired results without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for new beauty products that won’t have you mortgaging your house I highly recommend Beauty Banter!
Full lips are something we’re all itching for, (at least I know I am). Unfortunately I did not hit the genetic lottery and was left to fend for myself in this cold world full of “Kylie Jenner Lips.” Lips of all shapes and sizes are beautiful and wonderful and kissable, but if you’re looking for a little more fullness in the lip department don’t worry. Momma Taylor is here for you.
The first step to having voluptuous lips is to make sure those bad boys are hydrated. Just like your actual skin, your lips need a little bit of love and a lot of hydration to be at their full potential. I put rose salve on my lips every night and it has changed my entire life. I’ve also had the same container of it for a year and a half so for all my college gals; you definitely get your money’s worth. I bet you’re wondering, “Taylor how is having moisturized lips going make them fuller?”
Well first you’re going to need a couple of things.
As pictured above there is lip scrub from Lush. You need to exfoliate your lips to get all of the dead skin off of your lips so they aren’t flaky. Exfoliated lips will also provide a smooth canvas for your lipstick. If you want to spend $10 on lip scrub you can go buy it at Lush, but here is a home made lip scrub that works equally as well and gives you way more bang for your buck.
Now that we have smooth and prepped lips they should look a little something like this.
Now it’s time for lipstick, yay! I chose to use the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream, which gives a nice matte texture without leaving your lips feeling like the Sahara Desert. I chose the shade Buenos Aires because it is around the same shade of my lips and lighter lipstick creates an illusion of more full lips. These lippies are only $6, which makes my bank account and me ecstatic. Now let’s get to business. In order to apply the lip cream, wipe the excess formula off the wand and apply as you would lip liner. If you want to exaggerate your lips a tad, draw over your lip line around your cupid’s bow, (the little dip on your top lip). Be very careful when doing this and remember less is more. Don’t draw past your bottom lip because nobody wants to look like the Joker.
Your lips are lined and now just fill in the rest of your lips, you might need to add another coat. Get a little bit of concealer and put it as close around your lips as you can. Blend the concealer in to get clean lines for any mess-ups that might have occurred. Now we are going to highlight your lips. You can use a highlighter like I did or any light shimmery eye shadow and just dot it in the center of your cupid’s bow. Now your lips are good to go and you have an excuse to take duck face pictures.
The reality of college is you don’t get as much sleep as you want/need. Maybe you were up late studying for a major test, (or binge watching Netflix episodes). We’ve all been there, especially myself. In honor of those sleepless nights I present to you, the key to looking alive in under ten minutes. Sleep is precious to me and this look will allow you to hit that snooze button a couple more times.
Here is a real life picture of me at six in the morning with no alterations to my appearance. Can’t you tell how much I love mornings? As Beyoncè would say, “I woke up like dis,” and unfortunately I woke up like this.
To make yourself not look like an extra in a zombie movie here’s what you’re going to need:
The first step in your transformation to someone who looks well rested is splashing some cold water on your face. I know that sounds unpleasant but you’ll definitely be awake after that. Next, you need to moisturize. Use a moisturizer that has SPF in it and trust me your future self will thank me. As far as brands for moisturizer go try to find an oil-free moisturizer, I like Neutrogena and Olay. Your second step is priming your face and once again I like Neutrogena. Make sure you rub the products into you face in upward circular motions.
Now lets work on covering those blemishes. Get a concealer a tad lighter than your skin tone and a powder that matches your skin tone, (tips on choosing a concealer and powder will come in a later post). Put concealer on all of your visible blemishes. Use a concealer brush to draw triangles of concealer under both of your eyes. Next draw a line of concealer down the bridge of your nose and blend all of the concealer into your skin. Dust powder over your whole face with a big powder brush. Now you need to smile that pretty smile and put blush on the apples of your cheeks. If you’re unsure of what the apples are they are the parts of your cheek that stick out and make you feel like a chipmunk when you smile.
While on the topic of your face you’re going to want to use a highlighter to brighten up your skin. Coconut oil works wonderfully as a highlighter not to mention that you get a ton of it for super cheap. Put a small amount of coconut oil on your index fingers and lightly dab it on your cheekbones. Don’t use too much or you’ll end up looking like a glazed doughnut, a little goes a long way. For the finishing touches curl your eyelashes with a curler, I like the ELF brand curler. Lastly put a lip balm of your choice on because chapped lips are not cute.
Voila. I added about 4 hours of sleep in 8 minutes, and you can too.
Now that you have the secret to looking alive go conquer the world my sweet angels, and for the love of everything good in the world, get some sleep.
Hello and welcome to Beautifully Tayriffic. My name is Taylor Carfield and I enjoy puppies and eating large amounts of food. This blog is for all you students in college. This is for the people whose wallets shed tears of sadness when opened, this is for the people who are trying to look good but are “ballin’ on a budget.” Don’t worry I’m right there with you and I’m here to help. I am dedicated to finding men and women alike a source to find beauty products at a low price. I love beauty products and trying new things, unfortunately my bank account disagrees with my desire to buy every product Sephora has to offer. So here we are, finding products on our end of the price spectrum and let me tell you it is so possible.
In the posts to come I will not only be giving my advice on beauty products but also giving tips on how to use them to their full potential. My first piece of advice is you are beautiful the exact way you are. That is such a cliché and although this blog is based upon beautifying yourself I want to reiterate that you don’t need anything to be beautiful. Beauty comes from the inside. With that being said sometimes we all need a boost. Let’s be real there’s no feeling like perfecting that winged eyeliner or perfectly contouring that double chin, (don’t worry we all have one).
That is all ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for checking out my blog and I hope you will all continue to stick with me on this blogging journey. I will leave you with one last piece of advice. Remember to stay hydrated and as my granny would say, “Remember to hug someone everyday.”
